Description

Make soft, chewy, restaurant-style breadsticks at home using this easy recipe, topped with rich garlic parmesan butter.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup warm water (105-115 degrees F)
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted (for topping)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped

Instructions

  1. Combine the warm water, yeast, and sugar in a small bowl. Let stand for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Pour in the yeast mixture and the 2 tablespoons of melted butter. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
  3. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for 5 to 7 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a clean towel and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  6. Punch down the risen dough gently. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long, thin stick, about 8 to 10 inches long. Place the breadsticks on the prepared baking sheet.
  7. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until lightly golden brown.
  8. While the breadsticks bake, prepare the topping: In a small saucepan, melt the 1/4 cup of butter over low heat. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant. Remove from heat.
  9. Once the breadsticks are out of the oven, immediately brush them generously with the garlic butter.
  10. Sprinkle the tops evenly with the grated Parmesan cheese and chopped parsley. Serve warm.

Notes

  • For extra cheesy breadsticks, sprinkle mozzarella cheese over the tops during the last 2 minutes of baking before applying the garlic butter.
  • If you prefer a quicker rise, place the dough in a slightly warmed oven (turned off) to proof.
  • You can make the dough ahead of time and refrigerate it for up to 24 hours; let it come to room temperature before shaping.
