- 1 box devil’s food cake mix
- Ingredients for cake mix (eggs, oil, water, as per box instructions)
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Black food coloring
- White frosting or melted white chocolate
- Black piping gel or melted dark chocolate
Instructions
- Prepare the devil’s food cake batter according to the box instructions.
- Bake cupcakes in cupcake liners until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let them cool completely.
- For the chocolate frosting: Cream the softened butter in a large bowl. Gradually add the powdered sugar, alternating with milk, until smooth and creamy. Stir in the vanilla extract.
- Divide the frosting into two bowls. Leave one bowl white. Add black food coloring to the second bowl until you achieve a deep black color.
- Frost the cooled cupcakes with the black frosting.
- For the spiderweb effect: Place white frosting or melted white chocolate into a piping bag with a small tip, or a zip-top bag with a tiny corner snipped off.
- Pipe concentric circles of white frosting onto the black frosted cupcakes, starting from the center and working outwards.
- Use a toothpick or skewer to drag lines from the center of the cupcake outwards through the white circles, creating a spiderweb pattern.
- Alternatively, use black piping gel or melted dark chocolate on white frosted cupcakes for a similar effect.
Notes
- Ensure cupcakes are completely cool before frosting.
- Adjust food coloring for desired black intensity.
- Practice the spiderweb technique on a piece of parchment paper first if you are new to it.
