Description
Create a delicious and spiced pear butter using your slow cooker. This easy recipe preserves the sweet flavor of pears with warm spices, perfect for spreading on toast or enjoying with cheese.
Ingredients
Scale
- 6 cups peeled, cored, and sliced ripe pears (about 2.5 lbs)
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
Instructions
- Combine all ingredients in your slow cooker.
- Stir gently to ensure the pears are evenly coated with the spices and sugars.
- Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours, or on high for 4-5 hours, until the pears are very soft and have broken down.
- Remove the lid and mash the pears with a potato masher or immersion blender for a smoother consistency.
- Continue to cook uncovered on high for another 1-2 hours, stirring occasionally, until the butter has thickened to your desired consistency.
- Carefully ladle the hot pear butter into sterilized jars, leaving about 1/4 inch headspace.
- Wipe the rims of the jars clean and secure the lids.
- Process in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes (adjust for altitude) for shelf-stable storage, or store in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks.
Notes
- Use ripe but firm pears for the best flavor and texture.
- Adjust the spices to your preference.
- For a smoother butter, use an immersion blender before the final cooking stage.
- Ensure your jars are sterilized properly for safe canning.
