Description

Make this easy seven layer dip, a Tex-Mex appetizer that is perfect for any party. You will assemble seven distinct, flavorful layers for a crowd-pleasing dish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (16 ounce) can refried beans, regular or vegetarian
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 cup guacamole (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 tablespoon taco seasoning mix
  • 1 cup salsa, drained well
  • 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack or Mexican blend cheese
  • 1/2 cup chopped fresh tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup sliced black olives, drained
  • Optional: Chopped green onions for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, mix the refried beans with cumin and chili powder until combined. Spread this bean mixture evenly over the bottom of a 9-inch pie plate or clear serving dish. This is your first layer.
  2. Spread the guacamole evenly over the bean layer. To keep it fresh, you can brush a thin layer of water or lime juice over the top if you are making this ahead of time.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix the sour cream with the taco seasoning mix. Spread this seasoned sour cream mixture over the guacamole layer.
  4. Spoon the drained salsa evenly over the sour cream layer. Make sure the salsa is well-drained so the dip does not become watery.
  5. Sprinkle the shredded cheese evenly over the salsa layer.
  6. Top the cheese with the chopped fresh tomatoes.
  7. Finish the dip by scattering the sliced black olives over the tomatoes.
  8. If using, sprinkle with chopped green onions just before serving.
  9. Chill the best 7-layer dip for at least 30 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to meld. Serve with tortilla chips.

Notes

  • Use a clear glass dish so your guests can see all seven layers of this party layered dip.
  • For the freshest guacamole layer, prepare it right before assembling the dip.
  • If you are transporting this dip, keep it chilled until you are ready to serve.
