Description

Make delicious Red Velvet Donuts for a special Valentine’s Day breakfast. These treats bring warmth and flavor to your morning.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1-2 teaspoons red food coloring
  • For the Glaze: 2 cups powdered sugar, 1/4 cup milk, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a donut baking pan well.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking soda, and cocoa powder.
  3. In a separate medium bowl, whisk the buttermilk, egg, vegetable oil, vanilla extract, and red food coloring until combined. Add the vinegar.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined; do not overmix. A few small lumps are fine.
  5. Spoon or pipe the batter evenly into the prepared donut pan wells, filling each about two-thirds full.
  6. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Let the donuts cool in the pan for 5 minutes before carefully transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. While donuts cool, prepare the glaze: Whisk the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract together until smooth. Add more milk, one teaspoon at a time, if the glaze is too thick.
  9. Dip the top of each cooled donut into the glaze. Let the glaze set before serving.

Notes

  • You can substitute buttermilk with regular milk mixed with one teaspoon of lemon juice or white vinegar; let it sit for 5 minutes before using.
  • For a richer color, use gel-based red food coloring instead of liquid drops.
  • These donuts are best enjoyed the same day you bake them.
