Description
Make delicious Red Velvet Donuts for a special Valentine’s Day breakfast. These treats bring warmth and flavor to your morning.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 1 teaspoon white vinegar
- 1-2 teaspoons red food coloring
- For the Glaze: 2 cups powdered sugar, 1/4 cup milk, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a donut baking pan well.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking soda, and cocoa powder.
- In a separate medium bowl, whisk the buttermilk, egg, vegetable oil, vanilla extract, and red food coloring until combined. Add the vinegar.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined; do not overmix. A few small lumps are fine.
- Spoon or pipe the batter evenly into the prepared donut pan wells, filling each about two-thirds full.
- Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let the donuts cool in the pan for 5 minutes before carefully transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
- While donuts cool, prepare the glaze: Whisk the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract together until smooth. Add more milk, one teaspoon at a time, if the glaze is too thick.
- Dip the top of each cooled donut into the glaze. Let the glaze set before serving.
Notes
- You can substitute buttermilk with regular milk mixed with one teaspoon of lemon juice or white vinegar; let it sit for 5 minutes before using.
- For a richer color, use gel-based red food coloring instead of liquid drops.
- These donuts are best enjoyed the same day you bake them.
