Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 1 green bell pepper, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 1/4 cup water
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 8 slices provolone cheese
- 4 hoagie rolls, split
- Butter, for toasting rolls
Instructions
- In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium-high heat until browned. Drain off any excess grease.
- Add the chopped onion and green bell pepper to the skillet. Cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
- Stir in the minced garlic, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Cook for 1 minute more until fragrant.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the ketchup, water, Worcestershire sauce, and brown sugar.
- Pour the sauce mixture over the beef and vegetables in the skillet. Stir to combine.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce heat to low and cook for 5-10 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken.
- While the sloppy Joe mixture simmers, lightly butter the cut sides of the hoagie rolls. Toast them under the broiler or in a toaster oven until golden brown.
- Top each toasted roll half with a slice of provolone cheese.
- Spoon the sloppy Joe mixture generously over the cheese-topped bottom halves of the rolls.
- Place the remaining roll halves on top to form sandwiches.
Notes
- For an extra cheesy sandwich, you can broil the assembled sandwiches for a minute or two until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- You can substitute the provolone cheese with your favorite melting cheese, like mozzarella or American.
- If you like a spicier kick, add more red pepper flakes or a dash of hot sauce to the sloppy Joe mixture.
