Description

Make lean turkey burgers wrapped in crisp lettuce instead of buns for a light, low-carb meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound lean ground turkey
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 8 large butter lettuce leaves or iceberg lettuce leaves
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Optional toppings: Sliced tomato, thin red onion slices, mustard

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, gently combine the ground turkey, chopped onion, garlic powder, oregano, salt, and pepper. Do not overmix.
  2. Form the mixture into four equal patties, slightly wider than the lettuce leaves you plan to use.
  3. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  4. Cook the turkey patties for 5 to 7 minutes per side, or until the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees Fahrenheit.
  5. Remove the patties from the skillet and let them rest for 2 minutes.
  6. Prepare the lettuce: If using iceberg, trim the thick base slightly so the leaves lay flatter. If using butter lettuce, separate the leaves carefully.
  7. Place one cooked turkey patty onto the center of a lettuce leaf.
  8. Add your desired toppings, such as tomato or onion slices.
  9. Fold the sides of the lettuce leaf over the patty, then roll it up tightly from the bottom, similar to a taco or burrito, to create a secure wrap.
  10. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Use large, pliable lettuce leaves like butter lettuce or romaine hearts for the best wrapping structure.
  • To prevent the wrap from tearing, avoid overly wet toppings like excessive sauce.
  • For extra flavor, mix 1 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce into the turkey mixture before forming patties.
