Description
Make a thick, glossy, sweet, and savory teriyaki sauce from scratch in under 15 minutes using basic pantry ingredients. This recipe tastes much better than bottled versions.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1/2 cup soy sauce
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons cold water
Instructions
- Combine the soy sauce, 1/2 cup water, brown sugar, rice vinegar, sesame oil, minced garlic, and grated ginger in a small saucepan.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves completely.
- In a separate small bowl, whisk together the cornstarch and 2 tablespoons of cold water to create a slurry.
- Pour the cornstarch slurry into the simmering sauce while whisking constantly.
- Continue to cook and whisk for 1 to 2 minutes until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency.
- Remove the sauce from the heat. It will thicken more as it cools.
Notes
- Use low-sodium soy sauce if you prefer a less salty flavor.
- This sauce works well as a marinade for chicken, beef, or salmon before grilling or baking.
- For a thicker glaze, increase the cornstarch slightly, up to 1.5 tablespoons.
- Store leftover sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
