Description

Make your Thanksgiving turkey recipe simple and delicious with this herb butter roasted turkey. This recipe delivers a moist and flavorful turkey with crispy skin.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 whole turkey (12-15 pounds)
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh rosemary, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons fresh thyme, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh sage, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 large onion, quartered
  • 2 carrots, roughly chopped
  • 2 celery stalks, roughly chopped
  • 1 cup chicken broth

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 325°F (160°C).
  2. Remove the giblets and neck from the turkey cavity. Rinse the turkey inside and out with cold water and pat it dry with paper towels.
  3. In a small bowl, combine the softened butter, minced garlic, rosemary, thyme, sage, salt, and pepper. Mix well to create the herb butter.
  4. Gently loosen the skin over the turkey breast and thighs by sliding your fingers underneath. Spread about half of the herb butter under the skin.
  5. Rub the remaining herb butter all over the outside of the turkey.
  6. Stuff the turkey cavity with the quartered onion, carrots, and celery.
  7. Place the turkey on a rack in a roasting pan. Pour the chicken broth into the bottom of the pan.
  8. Roast the turkey for 13-15 minutes per pound, or until a meat thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the thigh registers 165°F (74°C).
  9. Baste the turkey with the pan juices every 30-45 minutes during roasting.
  10. If the skin starts to brown too quickly, loosely tent the turkey with aluminum foil.
  11. Once cooked, remove the turkey from the oven and let it rest for at least 20-30 minutes before carving.

Notes

  • Allow the turkey to come to room temperature for about 30-60 minutes before roasting for more even cooking.
  • For extra crispy skin, you can increase the oven temperature to 400°F (200°C) for the last 20-30 minutes of roasting.
  • Use the pan drippings to make a delicious gravy.
