Description

Experience the magic of Grandma’s Secret Apple Pie, a cherished family recipe that delivers an unforgettable taste. This pie features a perfectly flaky crust and a warm, spiced apple filling, making it a true crowd-pleaser.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 recipe double pie crust
  • 6 medium apples (such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon coarse sugar (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Line a 9-inch pie plate with one pie crust. Trim and crimp the edges as desired.
  3. In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and lemon juice. Ensure the apples are evenly coated.
  4. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared pie crust. Dot the top of the filling with the small pieces of butter.
  5. Place the second pie crust over the filling. Trim and crimp the edges to seal. Cut vents in the top crust to allow steam to escape.
  6. Brush the top crust with the beaten egg wash and sprinkle with coarse sugar, if using.
  7. Bake for 15 minutes at 400°F (200°C).
  8. Reduce the oven temperature to 375°F (190°C) and continue baking for another 35-45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly. If the crust starts to brown too quickly, you can loosely tent it with aluminum foil.
  9. Let the pie cool on a wire rack for at least 2-3 hours before slicing and serving. This allows the filling to set properly.

Notes

  • For an extra flavorful crust, you can add a pinch of sugar and cinnamon to the pie crust dough before rolling it out.
  • Feel free to adjust the spices to your preference. Some like a bit more cinnamon or nutmeg.
  • Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for the ultimate treat.
