French Onion Chicken Bake

Description

A simple baked chicken dish featuring the savory, cheesy flavors of French Onion Soup.


Ingredients

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 cup shredded Gruyère cheese (or Provolone)


Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a baking dish.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large oven-safe skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and cook slowly for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until deeply caramelized.
  3. Stir in the thyme, salt, and pepper with the onions.
  4. Place the chicken breasts in the prepared baking dish or leave them in the oven-safe skillet.
  5. Pour the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce over the chicken.
  6. Bake for 20 minutes, or until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit.
  7. Remove the dish from the oven. Sprinkle the shredded cheese evenly over the chicken breasts.
  8. Return to the oven and bake for an additional 3 to 5 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  9. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use homemade beef broth instead of store-bought.
  • If you do not have Gruyère, Swiss or Provolone cheese works well.
  • You can sear the chicken in the skillet before adding the liquid for extra browning.
