Description
Make this classic Irish soda bread quickly. You need no yeast for this simple, satisfying bread. It bakes fast and pairs well with butter or soup.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups All-Purpose Flour
- 1 teaspoon Baking Soda
- 1 teaspoon Salt
- 1.75 cups Buttermilk
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Lightly dust a baking sheet.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
- Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients. Pour in the buttermilk.
- Mix briefly with a wooden spoon until just combined. Do not overmix the dough.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface. Gently knead it 3 or 4 times to bring it together into a soft ball.
- Shape the dough into a round, about 2 inches high. Place it on the prepared baking sheet.
- Cut a deep cross into the top of the loaf, about 1 inch deep.
- Bake for 30 to 40 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving.
Notes
- For a softer interior, cover the loaf loosely with foil for the last 10 minutes of baking.
- You can substitute plain yogurt mixed with a little water or milk for buttermilk if needed.
- If you want a crispier crust, brush the top with a little extra buttermilk before baking.
