Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let stand for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Add the yeast mixture and 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil to the dry ingredients. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough and roll it out on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness.
  7. Cut the dough into squares or circles.
  8. Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat to 375°F (190°C).
  9. Carefully place a few dough pieces into the hot oil, ensuring not to overcrowd the pot.
  10. Fry for 1-2 minutes per side, until golden brown and puffed.
  11. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  12. Serve warm, drizzled with honey or dusted with powdered sugar.
