- 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar (for dusting)
Instructions
- Beat the softened butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
- Add the egg and vanilla extract; mix well.
- In a separate small bowl, whisk together the cocoa powder, red food coloring, vinegar, and baking soda until combined.
- Add the red mixture to the butter mixture and beat until the color is uniform.
- Gradually add the flour until just combined to form a soft dough. Do not overmix.
- Divide the dough in half, wrap each half in plastic wrap, and chill for at least 1 hour.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- On a lightly floured surface, roll out one piece of dough to about 1/4 inch thickness.
- Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out cookies. Reroll scraps as needed.
- Place the cutouts onto the prepared baking sheets.
- Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are just set. They will look soft in the center.
- Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Dust lightly with powdered sugar before serving.

- Chilling the dough is important for easy handling and shape retention.
