Make these delightful Red Velvet Heart Cookies for an easy and sweet Valentine’s Day treat. These cookies bring a lovely flavor and festive look to your celebration.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon red food coloring (gel preferred)
  • 1/2 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar (for dusting)

Instructions

  1. Beat the softened butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
  2. Add the egg and vanilla extract; mix well.
  3. In a separate small bowl, whisk together the cocoa powder, red food coloring, vinegar, and baking soda until combined.
  4. Add the red mixture to the butter mixture and beat until the color is uniform.
  5. Gradually add the flour until just combined to form a soft dough. Do not overmix.
  6. Divide the dough in half, wrap each half in plastic wrap, and chill for at least 1 hour.
  7. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  8. On a lightly floured surface, roll out one piece of dough to about 1/4 inch thickness.
  9. Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out cookies. Reroll scraps as needed.
  10. Place the cutouts onto the prepared baking sheets.
  11. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are just set. They will look soft in the center.
  12. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  13. Dust lightly with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

  • Use gel food coloring for the most intense red color.
  • Chilling the dough is important for easy handling and shape retention.
  • These cookies are wonderful plain, but you can frost them if you prefer.
