Description

This one-pot American goulash is a simple, budget-friendly meal. It features ground beef, macaroni, and tomatoes for a comforting, nostalgic dish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1 (14.5 ounce) can diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 cups elbow macaroni, uncooked
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional, for serving)

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned. Drain any excess fat.
  2. Add chopped onion to the pot and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Stir in minced garlic and cook for 1 minute more until fragrant.
  3. Pour in crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, and diced tomatoes (with their liquid). Add beef broth, uncooked macaroni, Worcestershire sauce, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Stir well to combine.
  4. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until macaroni is tender and most of the liquid has been absorbed. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
  5. Remove from heat and let stand for a few minutes before serving. If desired, sprinkle with shredded cheddar cheese before serving.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use a combination of ground beef and ground pork.
  • Adjust seasonings to your taste.
  • Leftovers store well in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
