Description
Make the perfect homemade pizza using this foolproof dough recipe. You will create a delicious, restaurant-quality pizza right in your own kitchen, honoring traditional flavors.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 1/2 cups warm water (about 105°F to 115°F)
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
- 2 tablespoons olive oil, plus more for the bowl
- 2 teaspoons salt
- Pizza sauce, cheese, and your favorite toppings to taste
Instructions
- Combine the warm water and sugar in a large bowl. Sprinkle the yeast over the top. Let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes until foamy.
- Add the flour, olive oil, and salt to the yeast mixture. Mix with a wooden spoon until a shaggy dough forms.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for 8 to 10 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
- Lightly oil a clean large bowl. Place the dough in the bowl and turn it to coat with oil. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel.
- Let the dough rise in a warm spot for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
- Preheat your oven and pizza stone (if using) to 475°F (245°C).
- Punch down the risen dough. Divide it in half for two medium pizzas or use it all for one large one.
- On a floured surface, stretch or roll the dough to your desired thickness and shape.
- Transfer the dough to a lightly cornmeal-dusted pizza peel or baking sheet.
- Spread your sauce, sprinkle the cheese, and add your desired toppings.
- Bake for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is bubbly.
Notes
- Using warm, not hot, water is key to activating the yeast correctly.
- For a crispier crust, place a pizza stone or inverted baking sheet into the oven while it preheats.
- If you prefer a tangier flavor, let the dough rise slowly in the refrigerator overnight.
- Brush the edges of the crust with a little olive oil before baking for better browning.
