Description
Make soft, chewy naan bread right on your stovetop. This easy recipe delivers restaurant-quality results without needing a tandoor oven. You will achieve a perfect texture every time.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup warm water (about 110°F)
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons plain yogurt (full-fat recommended)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil, plus more for brushing
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes until foamy. This shows your yeast is active.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and salt.
- Pour the yeast mixture, yogurt, and olive oil into the dry ingredients.
- Mix until a shaggy dough forms. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface.
- Knead the dough for 5 to 7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a damp towel.
- Let the dough rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
- Gently punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball.
- Working with one ball at a time, roll it out into an oval or teardrop shape, about 1/8 inch thick.
- Heat a cast-iron skillet or heavy-bottomed pan over medium-high heat until very hot. Do not add oil to the pan.
- Place one naan in the dry, hot skillet. Cook for about 1 minute until bubbles form on the surface.
- Flip the naan and cook the other side for another minute until brown spots appear. You can press gently with a spatula to encourage puffing.
- Remove the cooked naan from the skillet. Immediately brush the top lightly with olive oil or melted butter.
- Repeat with the remaining dough pieces. Serve warm.
Notes
- For Garlic Naan, mix 2 cloves of minced garlic with 2 tablespoons of melted butter and brush this mixture over the naan immediately after cooking.
- If your kitchen is cold, place the dough bowl inside an oven that is turned off with the light on to create a warm proofing spot.
- If you do not have yeast, you can make a quick version using baking powder, though the texture will be slightly different.
