Description

Make classic, fluffy French toast quickly using this simple recipe. This method results in golden edges and a custardy center, perfect for any morning.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 slices thick bread (Texas toast or brioche work well)
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk (whole or 2%)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon butter or oil for cooking

Instructions

  1. In a shallow dish, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and sugar until fully combined. This is your batter.
  2. Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add half of the butter or oil and let it melt until it coats the surface.
  3. Quickly dip each slice of bread into the batter, allowing it to soak for about 10 to 15 seconds per side. Do not over-soak, or the bread will become soggy.
  4. Place the dipped bread onto the hot skillet, ensuring slices do not touch.
  5. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side, until the French toast is golden brown and cooked through.
  6. Remove from the skillet and keep warm while you cook the remaining slices, adding more butter or oil as needed.
  7. Serve immediately with your preferred toppings.

Notes

  • Use slightly stale bread; it absorbs the batter better without falling apart.
  • For richer flavor, substitute half of the milk with heavy cream.
  • Adjust the cooking temperature to medium-low if the outside browns too quickly before the center heats up.
