Description
Enjoy these comforting, classic baked apples, perfect for a cool evening. We stuff crisp apples with a sweet, warm filling of brown sugar, cinnamon, and oats. This simple dessert brings the cozy flavors of fall right to your table.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 large firm apples (like Honeycrisp or Granny Smith)
- 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons water
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a small baking dish.
- Wash the apples. Using an apple corer or a small knife, carefully remove the core from the top of each apple, leaving about 1/2 inch at the bottom intact. Do not push through the bottom.
- In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar, cinnamon, oats, and flour. Mix well.
- Take half of the butter pieces and place one piece into the cavity of each cored apple.
- Spoon the sugar-oat mixture evenly into the center cavity of each apple, pressing it down lightly. Top each apple with the remaining small pieces of butter.
- Place the prepared apples into the greased baking dish. Pour the 2 tablespoons of water into the bottom of the dish around the apples.
- Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the apples are tender when pierced with a fork but still hold their shape. Basting the apples with the liquid in the pan halfway through baking helps keep them moist.
- Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving warm.
Notes
- Use firm apples that hold their shape during baking. Softer apples may turn to mush.
- Serve these warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of caramel sauce for an extra treat.
- If you prefer a crispier topping, increase the oats to 1/3 cup and use melted butter instead of pieces.
