Description
Bake sweet apples stuffed with a warm, spiced brown sugar filling. This simple recipe brings the comforting flavors of autumn right to your table.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 medium baking apples (like Honeycrisp or Fuji)
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
- 4 tablespoons packed brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- Pinch of salt
- 1/4 cup water
- Optional: 1/4 cup chopped pecans or raisins
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Wash the apples. Use a spoon or melon baller to carefully core the center of each apple, leaving about a half-inch border at the bottom so the filling stays in.
- In a small bowl, combine the softened butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Mix until it forms a crumbly paste. If using, mix in pecans or raisins now.
- Spoon the filling mixture evenly into the core cavity of each apple.
- Place the filled apples in a small baking dish. Pour the 1/4 cup of water into the bottom of the dish.
- Bake for 30 to 40 minutes, or until the apples are tender when pierced with a fork.
- Serve warm, perhaps with a drizzle of caramel or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Notes
- Use firm apples that hold their shape well during baking.
- If the tops start to brown too quickly, cover the dish loosely with foil.
- The water in the bottom of the pan creates steam, helping the apples soften evenly.
