Description

Make this classic Apple Strudel using ready-made puff pastry for a quick, delicious treat. You get crisp layers filled with spiced apples, raisins, and nuts. It’s perfect for any cozy gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 package (14.1 ounces) frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • 4 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup golden raisins
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten (for egg wash)
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the sliced apples, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, raisins, and chopped nuts. Toss gently to coat everything evenly.
  3. Gently unfold one sheet of thawed puff pastry onto a lightly floured surface. Roll it slightly into a larger rectangle.
  4. Brush the edges of the pastry lightly with the melted butter.
  5. Sprinkle the flour evenly over the center of the pastry rectangle. This helps absorb excess moisture from the apples.
  6. Arrange half of the apple mixture over the center of the pastry, leaving about a 1-inch border clear on all sides.
  7. Fold the long sides of the pastry over the filling. Then, gently fold the shorter ends inward to seal the strudel completely. You want a tight seam at the bottom.
  8. Carefully transfer the sealed strudel to the prepared baking sheet, seam-side down. Repeat the process with the second sheet of puff pastry and remaining filling.
  9. Brush the tops of both strudels evenly with the beaten egg wash. Cut a few small slits on the top of each strudel to allow steam to escape.
  10. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and deeply golden brown.
  11. Let the strudel cool on the baking sheet for at least 15 minutes before slicing.
  12. Dust generously with powdered sugar before serving warm.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, soak the raisins in a tablespoon of rum or hot water for 10 minutes before adding them to the apples.
  • If you prefer a traditional look, you can use the hand-stretched dough method instead of puff pastry.
  • Serve with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for a decadent dessert.
