Description

Make this classic old fashioned egg custard pie for a comforting, creamy dessert. This simple recipe uses basic ingredients for a smooth vanilla filling perfect for any gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (9 inch) unbaked pie crust
  • 4 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg, plus extra for topping
  • 2 cups whole milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Place the unbaked pie crust in a 9-inch pie plate.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk the eggs until they are light and slightly frothy.
  3. Add the sugar and salt to the eggs and whisk until combined.
  4. Stir in the vanilla extract and 1/4 teaspoon of ground nutmeg.
  5. Slowly pour in the whole milk while whisking constantly until the mixture is smooth.
  6. Pour the custard filling into the unbaked pie crust.
  7. Sprinkle a light layer of extra ground nutmeg over the top of the filling.
  8. Bake for 40 to 50 minutes, or until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean. The center should be mostly set but may have a slight jiggle.
  9. Let the pie cool completely on a wire rack before slicing and serving. This pie is best served chilled.

Notes

  • For a truly traditional dessert, use a homemade pie crust.
  • If you are making this for a holiday baking event, prepare it a day ahead; chilling improves the texture.
  • This creamy dessert pie pairs well with a light dusting of cinnamon if you prefer a warmer spice profile over just nutmeg.
