Description

Make these delightful rice paper dumplings for a satisfying snack or appetizer. We focus on achieving a wonderful crispy exterior, perfect for dipping. These are simple to put together and taste incredible.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 sheets rice paper
  • 1 cup finely shredded cabbage
  • 1/2 cup grated carrots
  • 4 oz firm tofu, crumbled (or ground chicken/beef)
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Vegetable oil for pan-frying

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine the shredded cabbage, carrots, crumbled tofu (or meat), soy sauce, sesame oil, garlic, and pepper. Mix the filling well.
  2. Set up a shallow dish with warm water. Quickly dip one sheet of rice paper into the water, just enough to soften it (about 10-15 seconds). Lay it flat on a clean, damp surface.
  3. Place about 1 tablespoon of filling near the bottom edge of the softened wrapper.
  4. Fold the sides of the wrapper inward over the filling.
  5. Tightly roll the wrapper up from the bottom to create a sealed dumpling shape. Repeat with remaining wrappers and filling.
  6. Heat about 1/4 inch of vegetable oil in a non-stick skillet over medium heat.
  7. Carefully place the dumplings seam-side down in the hot oil. Fry for 2-3 minutes per side until they turn golden brown and crispy.
  8. Remove the dumplings and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
  9. Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

  • Soak the rice paper only briefly; over-soaking makes them tear easily.
  • For an air fryer method, lightly brush the dumplings with oil and cook at 375°F (190°C) for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway.
  • You can substitute the filling with cooked shrimp or finely chopped mushrooms.
  • Always use warm water for dipping the rice paper.
