Description

Make a comforting, Southern-style chocolate cobbler that bakes into a cake top layer over a rich, gooey fudge sauce bottom.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup cold water
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup boiling water

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius). Lightly grease an 8×8 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add the cold water, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined; do not overmix. The batter will be thick.
  4. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared baking dish.
  5. In a separate small bowl, mix the brown sugar and boiling water until the sugar dissolves, creating a thin syrup.
  6. Carefully and slowly pour this hot syrup mixture over the top of the batter in the baking dish. Do not stir.
  7. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes. The top will look like a cake, and the bottom will form a fudge sauce.
  8. Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving warm.

Notes

  • Serve this cobbler warm, straight from the dish.
  • Top each serving with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for the best experience.
  • You can substitute buttermilk for the milk if you prefer a slightly tangier cake layer.
