Description
Make light, crispy tempura-battered green beans in your air fryer without deep frying.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound fresh green beans, trimmed
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 large egg, lightly beaten
- 3/4 cup ice-cold sparkling water
- Cooking spray (oil-based)
Instructions
- Wash and thoroughly dry the green beans. Pat them completely dry with paper towels; moisture prevents crispiness.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and pepper.
- In a separate small bowl, lightly beat the egg. Add the egg and the ice-cold sparkling water to the dry ingredients. Mix briefly with chopsticks or a fork until just combined. Do not overmix; lumps are fine for tempura batter.
- Preheat your air fryer to 380°F (195°C) for 5 minutes.
- Dip the dried green beans into the tempura batter, allowing excess batter to drip off slightly.
- Arrange the battered green beans in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Do not overcrowd the basket; work in batches if necessary.
- Lightly spray the battered beans with cooking spray.
- Air fry for 8 to 10 minutes, flipping the beans halfway through the cooking time. The batter should look golden brown and crisp.
- Remove from the air fryer and serve immediately.
Notes
- Using ice-cold water is key to achieving a light, airy tempura texture.
- Ensure your air fryer basket is lightly sprayed to help the batter brown and crisp up evenly.
- For best results, do not let the batter sit for long before using it.
